Dumpster Rental for Demolition Work
Demolition generates the heaviest, fastest-moving debris of any residential project. Getting the container sizing wrong means either truck weight violations or mid-project delays waiting for a swap-out. Here's how to plan it right.
Weight by Demo Material
| Material | Weight / Cubic Yard |
|---|---|
| Concrete | ~4,000 lbs |
| Brick / masonry | ~3,500 lbs |
| Mixed demo debris | ~1,200 lbs |
| Drywall | ~500 lbs |
| Wood framing | ~300 lbs |
The Concrete and Masonry Rule
You cannot legally fill a standard roll-off with concrete or brick. Weight distribution rules limit how much heavy material can go in. Use dedicated 10 yard "heavy" containers — sized specifically for high-density materials. If you have significant concrete volume, rent multiple 10 yard heavy containers instead of one large standard roll-off.
Sizing for Common Demo Scenarios
- Single room interior: 10–20 yard
- Whole-home interior gut: 30 yard, expect 1–2 swap-outs
- Garage demolition: 20–30 yard
- Concrete patio: Multiple 10 yard heavy containers
- Pool demolition: Dedicated contractor with equipment — standard dumpsters rarely sufficient
Hazardous Materials in Older Homes
Pre-1980 structures may contain asbestos (siding, insulation, old tile) or lead paint. These require certified abatement — not a dumpster. Discovering these mid-project means a full stop. Test before you demo.
Scheduling
Demo fills containers fast. A 4-person crew can fill a 30 yard in a single day during active gut work. Confirm swap-out availability with your operator before the project starts — 24–48 hours is typical, but peak season can stretch to 3–5 days.
