What Is a Roll-Off Dumpster?

When most people say "rent a dumpster," they mean a roll-off. It's the open-top rectangular container delivered on a tilting truck and left on-site for days or weeks. Here's how they work, what sizes exist, and when they're the right choice.

What Makes It a "Roll-Off"

The name describes the delivery. A roll-off truck has a tilting hydraulic bed. The driver backs up, tilts the bed, and the container rolls off onto the ground on its own wheels. Pickup reverses the process. This mechanism is what allows the container to be left on-site without the truck — unlike a front-loader or rear-loader that require the truck present for each pickup.

Roll-Off vs. Other Container Types

For residential and project-based rentals, roll-off is almost always what you want. Other types are for ongoing commercial waste — not one-time projects.

Standard Roll-Off Sizes

• 10 yard — smallest, best for heavy materials or small jobs
• 15 yard — mid-range, increasingly rare
• 20 yard — the most common residential size
• 30 yard — whole-home renovations and large projects
• 40 yard — major construction and demolition
